Shockwave
Shockwave uses high pressure acoustic waves to stimulate pain relief and healing. It can be used to treat a variety of conditions including:
Tendon and ligament injuries
Bone fractures (stress fractures/splints)
OA/Joint inflammation and pain
Foot Injuries
Wounds/Lick Granulomas
Back pain/kissing spines
Cauda Equina Syndrome (LS disease)
Our new generation device is anaesthesia free however some noise sensitive or anxious dogs may need calming tablets given beforehand.
If the area cannot be firmly tapped without causing pain, strong sedation or a quick general anaesthetic may be recommended.
How does it work?
The high pressure waves penetrates soft tissue and bounces of collagen heavy tissue like bone and ligaments. The cells rapidly compress and decompress and the body initiates a ‘trauma’ response. The effects are:
Cytokine release - stimulates growth factors and anti-inflammatory factor release into the area
Blood flow production - cytokines including VEGF and NO are released to increase circulation and blood flow into the area
Bone remodelling - A bone change response is initiated to increase or decrease growth and regulate turnover
This helps to stimulate the body’s own ability to help heal the area
How often are treatment sessions?
Sessions are usually much less frequent than laser therapy. Treatments range from 1-3 sessions spaced 2-3 weeks apart and are highly dependent on the individual and the chronicity of the case.
One round of treatment will last for at least 6-12 months so can be very cost effective over time.
