Joint injections
Joint injections can be an extremely effective, long-acting pain relief method. There are different types of medication that can be injected into a joint and each has its pros, cons, and different duration of action. Please book a discussion to determine if joint injections would be appropriate for your pet.
Melbourne Veterinary Rehabilitation is able to provide such services utilising the facilities at partner clinics. These clinics provide an anesthetic service and a dedicated nurse for your pet before, during, and after their procedure.
Joint injections are not done awake as it is too painful and the joint needs to be ‘loose’ and completely still to allow for a smooth procedure without complication. Sterile conditions are also essential to avoid introducing infection into the joint.
This service includes complimentary transport to and from home, post-procedure pain relief, and a recheck appointment.
Steroid joint injections
Steroids can be a good option for end stage joint pain that is difficult to manage with other forms of pain relief alone and can be a cost effective option.
Steroid injections are akin to ‘cortisone shots’ that are frequently used in the human sports medicine field and can be effective when used appropriately.
However there are some drawbacks to use of steroids in joints so book in a discussion to decide if steroid injections are the right option for your pet.
The effect of this treatment often lasts for 3-6 months but can vary from patient to patient.
Artificial joint fluid
Arthramid is the brand of artificial joint fluid that we use.
This is a polyacrylamide hydrogel that is used frequently in the equine industry to replace the loss of joint fluid and support the cartilage and joint capsule which is essential for the lubrication and ‘gliding’ ability of the joint.
We now offer this procedure to canines for the treatment of joint pain and arthritis. Please book in a discussion to decide if artificial joint fluid injection is the right option for your pet.
The effect of this treatment often lasts for 6-12 months sometimes more but it can vary from patient to patient.

Stem cell
Mesenchymal stem cells are a powerful source of long lasting joint pain relief and are a core treatment in regenerative medicine.
They mainly work by a natural process of stem cells excreting signalling molecules (cytokines) to reduce inflammation and promote healing. Some stem cells may integrate with the joint for some healing effect.
We source our stem cells from donor dogs and cats from a reputable stem cell lab that provides stem cells for both human and veterinary patients - Magellan Veterinary Stem Cells.
The effect of this treatment often lasts for 6-12 months, sometimes more but it can vary from patient to patient.
